This was the third year that I have been asked if I would like to share a table with some VERY talented friends in the gallery space. My contribution was smaller than I might have liked but I have been kind of busy this year with my little ones!

First up I had some needle felted tooth fairy hanging pockets. I made the first of these a few months ago when A lost his first tooth. The pocket is just the right size for a coin, a crystal or two and perhaps a letter from the tooth fairy. The beautiful roving that I used to make these came from here.
We headed outside and I suggested a walk in the little park that adjoins our house. We wandered downhill towards the large Casurina tree and while playing with the seed pods that we fond there an idea began to form in my mind. These pods make the best bees. This not an original idea rather one that I have seen in various places over the years and I cannot point you to a source. Perhaps it is The Nature Table book.

When we got back to the house I crept inside to get a few things and
then we were all set to sit outside and enjoy some sunshine and make
bees.

Our supplies : Scissors, wool (yarn) in brown and yellow, tulle, Casurina pods and sticks

The process is simple - wind the pod in the yellow wool and then tie off.
Cut an elongated oval from the tulle and roughly pleat with your fingers.
Cinch in the middle and tie the tulle on using the tails of the yellow wool.
Add the brown and tie a few knots.
Cut brown wool to desired length and then tie onto a stick and viola a simple little bee puppet perfect for flying around the garden.
I will note that after a few days of play the knots on the original bees were beginning to loosen so I added a drop or two of PVA glue to keep them from unravelling and so far that seems to be working well.

Do you know this song? I have heard it in the past but recently heard a new to me version by Renee and Jeremy and I love it! So much of the lyrics resonates with my life at the moment.

In an effort to slow down I have drastically cut down on screen time. Luckily we dont watch TV but I was finding that in the evenings when my little people were tucked up in bed my precious evening hours were being consumed with the computer - Pinterest, Facebook, reading my favourite blogs, Ravelry - I am sure you get the picture. There are so many amazing, generous, loving people out there with tempting patterns, words of wisdom, free tutorials and ideas that would leave my brain spinning.

In my absence from this space and even from catching up with some of my favourite blogs (sorry friends) I have focused on finding a healthier balance and use of my evening time. More time for sleep, my hubby and my crafts makes me a much happier person and Mama all round.

Spring is in full swing here and the last month has flown by in a blur of busy times. I am trying to get out more with my children when I can to spend time in the garden and the older two really enjoy , planting seeds, watering and the anticipation of all the good things to come. Baby L is expanding her little world and is enjoying the feel (and the taste) of the earth.

The basic premise is that you spend an hour a day making kids clothes for a week. It starts today and I think that my sewing time will have to be spent in the evening. Hopefully next week I will be able to share what I have made. I sat down last week and planned what my children need and the list includes a brithday dress for baby L and a sunbonnet in the next size up, H would like a sunbonnet too and if I get time there are a few things on my sewing wish list but we will see!

We are into the second week of school holidays and today we went to the dinosaur museum. So far we have had a nice balance between time spent at home on doing little projects (or not so little as in the case of the great bedroom shuffle that took place over the weekend) and a few local outings.

Well time to get dinner ready so that I can sew tonightRonniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15146852113340867967noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3292989298171042194.post-81019397421576442712012-09-29T06:15:00.000-07:002012-09-29T06:15:32.753-07:00Projects from the vintage sheet stashI love vintage bed sheets and started collecting them almost two years ago. I think I have a soft spot for them because I remember having pink floral sheets as a child (they would now be vintage if they were still around) and I thought those sheets were just so pretty. The stash is pretty sizeable now and I tell myself that I will not buy any more but then I find another and can't pass it up! I will have to start making a dent in the stash soon.

I recently finished these cushions that I made for the children's playroom. They were in fact started last year but only just got around to completing them. The designs were appliquéd from fabric scraps that I have saved from other projects over the years and actually apart from the zips and cushion inserts I didn't have to buy anything to make these (and that's good right).

The one with the curved road was inspired by one that I saw on a blog once (in the days before pinterest so I cannot remember where - sorry) and the house one was a drawing that A did last year.

A's drawing and the resulting cushion - he picked out the fabrics for this one

Both cushions are backed with pieces of vintage bed sheets (which I now
realise I didn't photograph). I still need to work out how to put in
zips properly.

The cushions were made to go onto this sweet seat that I made the cover for - from my sheet stash. It is such a cheerful piece and I love it. It makes me think that one day I will make my girls quilts from vintage sheets. I really like the simplicity of large squares (from memory 5 inches).
Sometimes I take A with me, usually though its H who wants to come along. My hubby stays home with Baby L (who sleeps) and whichever of the bigger children is not grocery shopping.

But every so often I go out all by myself! Its great. I have just my wallet, phone, shopping list and maybe my water bottle or lip gloss and even though I am doing the groceries I quite enjoy the time all to myself. On those rare Saturdays I like to pop into the fabric shop or the op shop or any other place that I usually avoid when I have small people in tow.

Well last weekend as I walked through the door of the op shop spotted a small hard case on the opposite of the shop and I immediately knew what it was. I made a bee line to it and sure enough it was a vintage typewriter. I was soooo excited. I have wanted one of these beauties for years and here was one with a $10 price tag!!

And that vintage sheet was found in the same shop

The man at the counter kindly found me a piece of paper so that I could test it out and I was thrilled that all seemed to be in working order. The typewriter has clearly been well cared for , the manual etc. was intact as well as a few accessories and I have declared her the best find ever .
I get a little time most evenings to work on projects in little chunks. While I can find it quite frustrating not to be able to do things quicker I know that if I work away at something it does eventually get completed (may not be helped by the fact that I have multiple project on the go at any given time and a backlog of ideas in my head - sometimes I don't know where to start!)
We seem to know a few little baby boys born lately and this is what I have been making for them.
It is a paper quilt where the little squares of paper are stitched together with gold thread. I am lucky to know the woman who has developed this style of paper craft and I even took some classes with her many years ago.
Paper quilts make great little gifts - and are something that I can get finished in a nap time or two.
Its a lovely little space especially on days when the clean piles of washing waited to be folded threaten to overtake the living room and I barely get to drink my tea!

I thought I would take a few pictures of our Winter table before we transition into Spring. I have taken photos in the past and love looking back on them. The changes from year to year are subtle but also somehow reflect where the children are up to.

Enjoy
For a tome she was happy to poke pins into a pincushion, then she progressed to threading pieces of felt onto a button that was attached to a ribbon, then sewing on some plastic canvans and her interest was still strong. So two weeks ago after a lovely morning at playgroup we called into our local craft shop to buy a hoop. H choose red - her current favourite colour - and we also (thankfully) got one for A as well to prevent arguments.

The next day we put together this little basket with some Hessian in the
hoop and some pre cut lengths of crochet cotton wound onto a card and a
large blunt needle.

H was keen to start and soon got the hang of which side she needed to
poke the needle - she was repeating it to herself (very cute). I did
tell her to do little steps with her needle but other than that and a
bit of initial help in holding the hoop and sewing at the same time
this was all her own little project.

My project is a bit of a long term one that has been on the go for over three years YIKES (on and off - well O.k more off!!) Its a quilt for A that I am hand quilting and its very nearly done. Hopefully I can share the finished quilt soon.
This was such a magical little project sharing my passion with one of my children. Hope we do more soon.
Once again I made a little wooden fairy and a felt teepee. This time we also made some largish fabric leaves upcycled from a pair of velour pants that meet an unfortunate fate whilst the wearer was climbing a tree!

H is increasingly interested in the sewing machine as well as any hand sewing I attempt and less easily distracted playing with the pins in the pin cushion. The leaves were a perfect project as they did not require too much concentration or accuracy and were very quick to make. In fact there was a third really large leaf that incorporated one of the original pants pockets but that was instantly whisked off by H as that pocket makes an excellent place for small felt chicks to sleep!

I think that I can now call this my official go to gift for three year old's as I have now made it three times - four if I include the set I made for H's 3rd birthday.
Each of my children have come along as babies and this past weekend it was baby L's turn. She was an awesome craft show companion. She managed to have two sleeps and when she was awake she was happy taking in all the sights. It was lovely wandering around all day with her in the carrier.
A bit of variety that should have me happily creating as time permits. English paper piecing is new to me - something that I gave admired on other blogs. I have vision of my little girls in summer dresses embellished with hexagons and maybe even a dolly quilt. The paper quilt will be perfect for the three little boys that were recently born and who I want to give a little handmade something to. Now if only I could get an extra hour or two a day . . .Ronniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15146852113340867967noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3292989298171042194.post-27825617110030590552012-08-08T04:07:00.000-07:002012-08-08T04:07:07.778-07:00The Mitten - a story set

A little while ago (last year in fact!) there was a how to article in this issue of Living Crafts. It was on how to make a story set with wooden animals and was based on the story of The Mitten. I instantly knew that I would be making this for my own children because I love the Mitten story and also happened to have a copy of the Jan Brett book that I picked up at an op shop a few years ago.

Full of enthusiasm I carefully cut out the wooden figures and then popped them into a little basket with some sand paper ready for those quite moments, when the children are happily playing outside and I am all caught up with the washing and weeding and the million other little jobs that fill my time to be done so that I could hand sand those pieces. Well weeks and months passed, life was busy, it was a new year with a new baby and still the pieces waited. I did manage to do little bits here and there and then in mid May this year I decided that I really did want to get this project done so that A and H could play with it while it was winter.

So I got sanding, then added some simple detail with the wood burner tool. The article suggested painting the figures with a wash of watercolour paint but I loved the natural beauty of the wood so my next stepo was to seal each piece with some home made beeswax wood polish. H helped with this and loved the process. Then all I had to do was make a giant mitten.

Well I got it done and right before our household became very sick with colds, ear infection and asthma. Needless to say that it was very handy having something new to distract the children with and they both requested the mitten story many times.
It feels so good to complete a project especially one that has waited so long. I am on a bit of a UFO (unfinished object) kick at the moment so hopefully I will be back soon to share some more.
Do you know the story of The Mitten? Do you have a favourite winter story?
My niece recently turned three and I wanted to give her something handmade. My own little three year old loves making cups of tea for me in her play kitchen and so I thought that some little felt tea 'accessories' might be well received.

Both the tea bags and cakes were super easy - I didn't use patterns I just winged it and I was happy with the results - but best of all my niece enjoys them.
My own two little people really liked the tea bags and even though we don't have much in the way of play food I am now committed to making another set of tea bags.Ronniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15146852113340867967noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3292989298171042194.post-73460523732551379082012-07-19T04:50:00.000-07:002012-07-19T04:50:57.271-07:00Giveaway

These photos were taken on the morning of the first day that H could wear her tunic. She loved matching baby L. The skirt is a lot fuller that the one that I made last winter but I think it works well and as H discovered when we arrived at our playgroup that day the fullness means that she can pull it up to make some pretty neat wings - heheh.

The pattern is "Bloom" by Georgie Hallam but I worked the skirt without the lace work making it the perfect no thinking knit for me.

H received some little plastic toy ponies for her birthday. She is
probably a bit young for this type of toy and they were sitting about
unused. Then one night via pinterest I saw a sensory tray that
incorporated similar small ponies and I wondered if H might enjoy that.

It was simple enough to put together using bits and bobs from around the
house - the ponies (of course), a silicone cupcake form, some shells and
pompoms along with the rice in a round container.

I coloured the rice using rubbing alcohol and food colouring - the
instructions are easy to find if you Google. I have also, in my past
life as a pre-school teacher coloured rice without the rubbing alcohol
with good results i.e colourfast and without the nasty smell.
H was a little unsure at first. She is usually reluctant with new textures. We do have another larger rice tray that we set up under our shady wisteria in summer but it been a while since the children have played with it.
She carefully scopped up some rice into the shells so that the ponies coud have a drink.
Then H said they needed plants. After a quick trip to our own Aladdin's cave better known as the spare room I was able to give her some (artificial) green leaves. H then carefully planted these in the rice.
Next H raided her brothers blocks and added two castle towers so that the treasure could be safe at the top. She even asked her Dadda if he might make some smaller towers for the ponies : )
All up I think H played with the tub for a little over half an hour which is a good for her age and it was also a language rich activity. This is not the type of play activity that H does on a regular basis but it was a nice changeRonniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15146852113340867967noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3292989298171042194.post-56632063277492292592012-06-18T05:54:00.000-07:002012-06-19T03:29:18.644-07:00First stitchesI was a very proud Mama the last week because A did his first hand sewing. Well not really his first as he did make a place mat for H using shelf liner, coloured wool and a bodkin and he made a felt stocking for baby L (in preparation for Christmas!) by lacing felt .
He used some scraps form a project that I was cutting out and first he made a little pillow for the fairy garden. He stuffed the pillow with cotton wool. Then he wanted to make a beanie hat for the fairy and finally he cut a blanket and then a scarf.

H and I have been noticing recently that our garden is being frequented by a stunning pair of Rosella's. So the other day I saved some bread crusts so that we could make some bird feeders for our feathered friends. They are quick and easy to do and best of all can almost be entirely by the children. A and I have made these a few times over the years and he loved remembering as he was guiding his sister this time.

The feeders are simply the crust slice that I cut into two pieces and poked a bit of a hole with the point of a knife. I then set them aside to dry overnight.

In the morning I made a wool loop on each piece of crust.

We spread them with peanut butter

I was not lucky enough to get a picture of the birds eating their yummy treat but 24 hours later there was not anything left. The Rosellas did visit and also a wattle bird and some currawongs.

After we were done hanging the bird feeders it was the perfect time to fly a kite and run around.
My little ones love playdough and we were overdue for a new batch. So
the other day H and I decided to make a fresh batch. Little H loves to
help out in the kitchen.

Once we had made the dough we divided it and I put a few drops of colour
into the centre of each white ball. By this time A was interested in
helping and came to pick a colour.

Then the little ones got busy kneading the colour into the dough.

As much as I love my children to play outside some afternoons its just way too cold.
To add to that A has asthma and Baby L needs to stay warm and cosy so
we are finding that some afternoons we stay inside. One of the
children's favourite games is to hit a balloon with a fly swat. Its
great active fun with minimal risk to each other or the house being damaged!

After the bigger children have had their fun and moved on to slightly less energetic persuits Baby L gets some floor time to practice her rolling skills. She is very proficient and can roll the length of the room in a very short amount of time. I dare not leave her alone as she often gets herself under the coffee table or wedged up by the lounges.
Here is a gift that I recently made for a friends birthday. It has been a while since I have done any embroidery and it was a really lovely to stitch away. The pattern was a freebie form this lovely site. I coloured the cloth in with standard crayola crayons before heat setting with an iron and then stitching the design.
I find that draw string bags are very handy especially for craft projects and I hope that my friend finds the same.Ronniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15146852113340867967noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3292989298171042194.post-38988771164268197412012-05-27T05:23:00.000-07:002012-05-27T05:23:11.939-07:00Autumn CraftingThe girls and I have slowley found a rythym to our days whilst A is away at school. It has taken us a while because almost two hours a day are taken up with school drop off and pick up and we also need to accomodate baby L's sleeps.
Last week H and I did a craft using some of the beautiful autumn leaves that we are lucky enough to be surrounded by at the moment. These leaf transparencies are so simple yet so effective.
We simply folded a long piece of waxed luncheon paper (with the wax sides together) then I rounded the corners. We opened up the paper and arranged the leaves to our liking.
When we were happy with our arrangement we closed the paper and then I used a warm iron which melts the wax and keeps the leaves in place.
